Breitling/AOPA Navitimer 809 (1964) 24 hour
This Breitling/AOPA Navitimer ref 809 watch with serial number 987006 was manufactured in 1964. The Case, Dial, Hands and Movement are in excellent condition and are left untouched.
This is a rare Navitmer ref 809 with a rare 24 hour indication dial.
On May 24 1962, when Scott Carpenter went into space with Aurora 7, a Navitimer featuring 24 hour indication over a single turn of the dial was produced as the notion of day and night is extremely relative in space, this configuration would enable space crews not to confuse midday with midnight. Before it was cleared for travel in Space the watch had to pass some extremely tough tests carried out by NASA. It was produced throughout the sixties with both AOPA’s Wing and Breitling’s Doublewing logo on the dial; both under the name Navitimer & Cosmonaute.
The gloss gilt dial is excellent for its age and the luminous markers have patina and are no longer luminous.
The movement is the manual wound Calibre Venus 178, as you can see from the photos the movement is in excellent condition and has been serviced in our workshop and comes with a 2 year guarantee.
The name 'Navitimer' is a combination of the words Navigation & Timer, since the watch was originally developed as a navigation watch for pilots, who could use the slide rule to calculate remaining distances, fuel consumption etc.. The Navitimer seriously put Breitling on the world map. It’s until today the most famous watch they ever produced and it’s unlikely that it will ever be surpassed. Generally it can be said that the Navitimer with 3 Sub dials was made in four editions/generations cased in a small watch case.
The watch comes ready to wear on an original Breitling leather strap along with Breitling Pin Buckle.
